Throughout the year groups such as Ripon Museums Trust and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and many others hold events that allow you to get hands on and involved with the heritage of the area, and offer the opportunity to see treasures normally closed to the public.
Talks from authors, experts and those actively involved in the preservation and restoration of our heritage can offer fascinating insights from behind the scenes.
Hear the stories, experiences and motivations that shape their work and take the opportunity to ask questions and uncover little known secrets.
Heritage Open Days are an annual event at the beginning of September that allow access to a whole range of extraordinary properties that would normally be closed to the public.
Some of these sites are brought to life with re-enactments and costume volunteers to talk about the life and times of those who built them.
In Harrogate two of the most iconic buildings are open for touring, the Turkish Baths holds guided tour every Wednesday, and the Harrogate Royal Hall holds open days when the lovingly restored grandeur of the hall is open to the public.
Guided walks offer a unique historical perspective to the landscape providing a broader context to your walk.Try your hand at the skills that have shaped the Yorkshire landscape such as dry stone walling and find out why these amazing structures last so long.
As you travel round Nidderdale AONB, you will notice large outcrops of rock protruding from the ground often in unlikely shapes.
Join tours to find out about the process and elements that give this area its distinctive geology creating a raw and beautiful landscape.
The same landscapes hold great mineral wealth that man has mined and quarried for over 2000 years including lead and other metals, but also limestone which is still quarried in Nidderdale to this day.
Local enthusiasts offer tours of the abandoned facilities for the rare chance to see inside the industrial heritage of the area and learn more about the industries of times gone by.
