We’re reopening the Sallyport at Knaresborough Castle for another round of guided tours! Step back in time and explore the secret underground tunnel once used for sneaky escapes and daring attacks. Perfect for history lovers, adventure seekers, and families!

Guided tours of Knaresborough Castle’s hidden Sallyport tunnel
Dates: 30th October – 2nd November
Times: 11am, 1pm, & 3pm each day
Price: ÂŁ3 Adults | Children FREE
No Pre-booking Required
🏰 What is the Sallyport? The Sallyport is one of the castle's most fascinating features. This hidden tunnel was large enough for small groups of armed men to slip out quietly at night to launch surprise attacks. Carved from solid rock in the 13th or 14th century, it runs down to the dry moat’s exit.
📍 Directions: Knaresborough Castle, Castle Yard, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, HG5 8AS
Arrive at the Knaresborough Castle Courthouse Museum. (Card payment only on the day)
⚠️ Important Info:
Tours operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
No pre-booking required.
Max group size: 12 per tour.
Tour Duration: Approx. 30 minutes.
Accessibility: The Sallyport is accessed via stairs, with some slippery paths. Sturdy footwear advised. Low light levels. Suitable for ages 5+.
