Nidderdale Itinerary HSG

Explore Nidderdale

Your Weekend in the Outdoors

Nidderdale is a beautiful rolling landscape with so much to offer. While even an entire week isn't long enough to explore the attractions and highlights of Nidderdale, here is our recommendation of how to get the most from a three day break in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Explore natural wonders, taste artisan dales crafted gin, burn off energy and experience the thrill of the landscape, either from above or from within. Nidderdale is a playground of adventure and fun, and you are cordially invited.

It's like art, but it's natural!

Start your weekend by taking a look across your location at Brimham Rocks. With astonishing views and incredible spectacle, the National Trust site of Brimham Rocks is a true natural wonder.

Explore the implausible rock formations that were hundreds of thousands of years in the making. Enjoy some of the best views across Nidderdale from the ground or clamber up and around a few of the rocks yourself. Many of the rocks have even been given nicknames due to the curious nature of their shapes.

Yorkshire Gin made in Nidderdale

Continue your day with a visit to Whittaker's Distillery, deep in the rolling hills of lower Nidderdale. Still relatively new, this passion project of a distillery now features its own visitor’s centre and bar where after your tour you can taste up to nine different gins and even buy a little something to take home.

Whittakers Distillery is also dog friendly, so canine friends don’t need to be confined to the car for your visit.

Studfold is a great way to pass a morning or even longer, take a picnic of tasty treats from Pateley Bridge high street or order one to collect on arrival.

In the Gorge, but not 'in' the Gorge

How Stean Gorge has something else with which to 'Wow' its visitors, its own Bistro Cafe cantilevered out above the gorge. With floor-to-ceiling glass walls and panels of glass in the floor there is a uniquely immersive atmosphere that allows the opportunity to observe those adventuring their way through the gorge below.

With an expansive menu of delicious local produce lovingly sourced from Nidderdale businesses, you can enjoy the Gorge from the cosy comfort of being very much inside!

Walking it off in Upper Nidderdale

Walk off your lunch around this breathtaking feat of early 20th century engineering. This easy to follow four mile route follows alongside the reservoir to its top, crosses the dam of Angram Reservoir directly above it and in the shadow of the immense peaks of Little and Great Whernside.

Returning you will also pass the remains of Lodge village, sacrificed to the reservoir. As a finalé you cross the 80ft high Scar House Dam and look down from the viewing points if your senses can take it!
