St Robert’s Cave and chapel in Knaresborough are a rare medieval hermitage, carved into limestone. St Robert of Knaresborough, born Robert Flower in York, lived as a hermit, attracting followers for his holiness, particularly the poor and sick. He spent his later years in the cave, with a chapel built by his brother nearby. Known for miraculous cures, he died in 1208 and was later recognized as a saint in 1252, though never officially canonized. The site remains a testament to his life and devotion.
