Virtuoso Strings
Grieg’s popular Holberg Suite, a supremely crafted work harking back to classical times, opens the concert. The strings are then joined by Yorkshire Tenor, Nicholas Watts, and horn player Catherine Hewitt (a regular principal player with St Cecilia) in Britten’s atmospheric song cycle exploring the calm and sinister aspects of night. After the interval, the strings take to the stage alone again in Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence - a virtuosic masterwork, bursting at the seams with love and joy for the city he adored.
