On The Waterfront (A)
On the Waterfront | 1954 | A | US | Dir. Elia Kazan | 108 mins | B&W
On the Waterfront is perhaps the definitive film to showcase the method style of acting. Marlon Brando Gives an Oscar winning performance as the ex-boxer turned longshoreman, Terry Malloy. He gets mixed up in the corrupt world of his union bosses whilst falling for Edie Doyle, played by a luminous Eva Marie Saint; a role for which she also won an Oscar in her feature film debut.
Elia Kazan, also directed Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire and was one of the most influential film directors in Hollywood history. Some critics read On the Waterfront as a personal defence of his action in naming names when he testified before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1952.
In a film with so many outstanding moments who can forget the scene in the back of a cab when Terry confronts his older brother, Charley. “I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let’s face it.”
