About Ripon Cathedral

Step into the timeless beauty of Ripon Cathedral, a remarkable place of worship at the heart of North Yorkshire with a history spanning more than 1,350 years.

Ripon Cathedral is a medieval marvel boasting a fascinating history all the way back to the 7th century. With free entry, visitors are invited to explore this magnificent medieval cathedral, including its Anglo-Saxon crypt, dating from 672 AD, the oldest intact structure of any English cathedral still in use today. Serving the city of Ripon and the stunning county of North Yorkshire, worship is the heartbeat of the cathedral, with no fewer than three services each day, including Choral Evensong (5.30pm / 3.30pm Sunday), sung five times weekly by the acclaimed Ripon Cathedral choir.

Open for all

Open daily (8.30am–6pm Monday–Saturday and 12pm–5pm on Sunday), the cathedral offers visitors the chance to learn more about its remarkable past and admire the excellence of its stonework, woodwork and stained glass. A team of experienced guides are on hand to share insights into the cathedral’s extensive history, dating back over 1,350 years. Bespoke 60-minute group tours are available by booking in advance, or visitors are welcome to pick up a guide postcard and explore at their own pace.

People of all ages and backgrounds are warmly welcomed, and free workshops are regularly held throughout the school holidays where children can unleash their creativity and engage with their surroundings. Interactive trail sheets are also available year-round, encouraging younger visitors to explore both inside and outside the cathedral.

Musical heritage on show

For those who are musically inclined, weekly free concerts take place most Thursday lunchtimes during term time, set within the stunning quire. Featuring a variety of musicians and performances across the year, these concerts offer a perfect opportunity to absorb the tranquil atmosphere and step away from the stresses of daily life. In June, the Summer Organ Festival showcases recitals from the cathedral’s organists and guests. The cathedral also hosts a wide range of external concerts, from classical and choral to contemporary music, there truly is something for everyone. See the “What’s On” section of the website for ticket details.

While admission is free, donations are very warmly welcomed, as it costs around £6,000 a day to keep the cathedral open and accessible to all.

Boasting unusual treasures of art and design, including carvings thought to have inspired Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the cathedral offers a truly memorable experience, taking visitors on a journey of discovery and inspiration. A warm welcome awaits.
