Immerse yourself in the natural world through a variety of walks that range from easy-to-follow routes perfect for a carefree amble with friends, to the personal challenge of ascending great peaks or completing a long-distance route. Take a picnic from one of Yorkshire’s great bakeries and enjoy it at a stunning landmark or viewing point or pack the binoculars for a walk that will showcase the amazing animal and birdlife that calls North Yorkshire home.
If you’re looking for a more epic challenge, why not try walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks in a race against the clock, summitting the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough. A firm favourite of serious walkers, the iconic Coast to Coast Walk spans 192 miles. Starting in St Bees in West Cumbria, the walk takes in the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, ending in the charming seaside village of Robin Hood’s Bay.
Venture into the North York Moors National Park and take in the stunning scenery, from the beautiful heather moorland to vibrant woodland, there is a fantastic range of walks available. If you enjoy a linear walk, why not get your boots on and make your way along the Cleveland Way, starting in the picturesque market town of Hemsley and finishing on the coast at Filey Brigg. Take a stroll in the Howardian Hills and enjoy historic pathways and unique landmarks, or head west and admire the spectacular Ribblehead Viaduct on the Whernside and Ribblehead Circular walk.
Whether you’re looking for a self-guided route or walking as part of organised group, there is no shortage of beautiful and accessible walks across the varied terrain of the county. Head up the coast using the 21-mile stretch of old railway line between Scarborough and Whitby, known locally as the Cinder Track. Or if you enjoy combining a ramble with learning more about local history, then you can choose from a range of local heritage trails.
There are also plenty of dog-friendly routes and places to enjoy, such as the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail or the Malham Landscape Trail.
