10 reasons why a day out in Knaresborough is like a day at the seaside
10 reasons why a day out in Knaresborough is like a day at the seaside:
Knaresborough is a delightful market town with the ruins of a medieval castle perched on a cliff top and winding streets and passageways leading down to the River Nidd below. The majestic viaduct that brings thousands of visitors arriving by train is one of the most photographed landmarks in the area, just make sure that you are selfie ready!
Take in the views, browse in the independent shops, buy a freshly baked pork pie or hire a rowing boat for some fun on the river.
Highlights of a visit include: Knaresborough Windows, a trail of artworks to be spotted around the town (pick up a guide from the Tourist Information Centre); Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well reputed to be England’s oldest tourist attraction; Knaresborough Castle and Museum and the traditional English market held every Wednesday (often with an appearance by the Town Crier in traditional attire).
It has often been remarked that a day out in Knaresborough evokes seaside feelings despite being inland. We explored some reasons why that might be the case.
10 reasons why a day out in Knaresborough is like a day at the seaside:
- Water: the River Nidd gives the town a seaside feel as people enjoy sitting outside at the cafes along the riverside taking in the views as they eat. Enjoy a scenic walk or hire one of the popular rowing boats.
- Castle: the town has a ruined medieval castle, not the opportunity for seaside sandcastles, but from its vantage point at the top of the cliff the castle offers magnificent views of the river and viaduct below.
- Places to picnic: if you have brought your own food or bought something from one of the town’s delis or cafes to takeaway we can recommend the castle grounds and the nearby park called Bebra Gardens as two beautifully maintained picnic spots to enjoy your meal. At the other end of town the grounds of Conyngham Hall are also suitable for picnics.
- Paddling: if getting your feet wet is an essential part of your day out then head to the paddling pool in Bebra Gardens.
- Fish and Chips: this staple food of seaside outings can easily be found in Knaresborough. The closest to the Market Place is Drakes who provide both takeaway and restaurant service.
- Ice cream: delicious ice cream is available in many flavours at outlets along the riverside and in the town centre, including diary free options.
- Seaside Entertainment: Crazy Golf is available at Conyngham Hall and there is an 18 hole putting green in the castle grounds.
- Donkey Rides: sometimes there is a donkey on Waterside giving rides to children.
- Cafes and afternoon tea: when the time comes to warm up with a cuppa take your pick from the cafes on Waterside and those in the town centre. There are plenty of options for vegetarian and gluten free diets.
- In common with seaside towns - it gets busy on sunny days and Bank Holidays!
If you are in the seaside mood then the picturesque town of Knaresborough might be your cup of tea for a day out. If you are looking for a longer stay Knaresborough offers a range of accommodation including hotels, B&B’s, apartments and caravan parks and a base from which to explore the town and the countryside beyond.
