See How our Gardens Grow - Winter
Where to see winter gardening Inspiration
RHS Garden Harlow Carr is at its most magical as low light levels and frosts highlight its natural shapes and textures in the winter months. Seed heads, fragrant winter flowering shrubs, Viburnum x bodnantense cultivars and ornamental grasses create drama.
As winter draws to an end, buds on the trees begin to swell and catkins appear on shrubs such as hazel.
On the woodland floor at Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens, bluebells can be seen emerging through the leaf litter and by early February, the first snowdrops are usually flowering, both in the garden and in the woods.
GARDENing for NATURE - TIPS FOR WINTER
Resist the urge to cut everything back at the start of winter, the dying vegetation provides shelter and habitat for wildlife. Bird feeders offer a reliable food source through the winter months, but give them a good clean to ensure they do not carry mould or diseases.
Winter flowers like hellebores, snowdrops and native primroses not only offer colour in the dark months, but offer vital nectar and pollen to bees that venture out on milder days.
At the end of winter, place square edged stones or old bricks standing proud, in partly secluded places around the beds. Song thrushes can use them to smash snails against in spring and summer! You will see fragments of shell through the year from their use.
