Connect to the past and feel good on your Yorkshire break

As we focus on our health and wellbeing and look for things to do to feel good, a visit to a cultural or historic attraction gives us a sense of connection with the places around us. Our corner of North Yorkshire has many beautiful sites to visit, each with its own unique story, allowing you to feel at one with your surroundings.

Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens

Completed in 1716, stepping inside Beningbrough Hall surrounds you in stunning architecture with intricate features creating a space that intrigues and delights and is bound to make you feel good. The ground floor tells the story of Beningbrough through the people that lived and worked on the estate, and the items on display allow you to immerse yourself in the history of this stately home. The first floor houses the Reddihough Galleries, that displays a changing exhibition of works by international artists. Alternatively you can stop a while in the second-hand book room and peruse the shelves, taking time for yourself to relax in beautiful surroundings.

The Turkish Baths, Harrogate

A session in a spa is the perfect way to feel good, and the Turkish Baths are as popular today as they were when they first opened in 1897. A session here is like stepping back in time. Start your experience in the steam room where the eucalyptus-infused steam opens your pores. Follow this by working your way through each hot room and intersperse the hot rooms with a dip in the refreshing plunge pool. Repeat the process as many times as you wish before relaxing on one of the beds with a good book. You will leave glowing and feeling rejuvenated.

Royal Pump Room Museum

Designed by Issac Shutt and opened in 1842, wealthy visitors would flock to the Pump Room for their daily drink of sulphur water in the quest to feel good, sometimes more than once a day. On a visit to the Royal Pump Room Museum today, you can learn about the different treatments people would take in their pursuit of health and restoration in Victorian times. See the wells in the basement through the glass floor and take in the smell of the sulphur water... if you are brave enough!

Mercer Art Gallery

Previously the Promenade Rooms, the Mercer Art Gallery is now home to an eclectic programme of changing exhibitions featuring traditional works from the permanent collection, plus diverse works of art from invited artists.

Take a seat and indulge in some ‘slow-looking’ which allows you to see and appreciate artwork in a different light, and engage all your senses to appreciate the artwork, including the sounds and smells around you. This is a great way to improve well-being as you can slow down for a moment in this stunning, grand space.
